The United National Transport Union (UNTU) are not involved in a strike of drivers of Metrorail in Cape Town over the past two days after one of our members, Mr. Pieter Barend (Piet) Botha, a train driver, was shot twice and died after being robbed at the Netreg Station in the Western Cape.
UNTU yesterday condemned the senseless barbaric murder and demanded that the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) ensure that its stations are safe for employees and commuters to use and investigate why there were not ample security present when this incident occurred.
Mr. Steve Harris, General Secretary of UNTU, urged the Union’s members to remain calm and allow the South African Police Services (SAPS) to investigate so that they can arrest these murderers so that the law can take its cause.
“The reaction of his colleagues on UNTU’s Facebook page shows that Mr. Botha was loved amongst them,” says Mr. Harris.
For more enquiries phone Mr. Harris on 082 566 5516.
