The United National Transport Union (UNTU) would like to congratulate James Cooper of Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) in Cape Town in the Western Cape as the overall winner of the UNTU recruitment drive from 27 October 2016 until 9 December 2016.
As the overall winner, James receives prize money of R7 500 from UNTU plus R1 500 for recruiting the most members in his division.
“This is fabulous news just before Christmas,” says James (54), an operational supervisor and a trade union representative who joined the union 36 years ago.
According to James he uses UNTU’s excellent benefits, especially the discount at Tiger Wheel & Tyre, Ford and Hyundai, as a selling point.
“Most members of other union and non-union members are not aware of the added benefits like our holiday resort, Voetplaatpark, that you get when you join UNTU,” says James.
UNTU also pay R100 to the member who has recruited a new member. James says he gives his R100 back to the new member who joined the union as an incentive for them to follow his example by recruiting members.
UNTU would also like to thank and congratulate the UNTU recruitment drive winners in all the other divisions who all WON prize money of R1 500 each.

- Jabulile Madonsela of Transnet National Port Authority (TNPA) in Richards Bay.
- PL Lolwana of PRASA in the Western Cape.
- Mas’themba Ntanjana of Transnet Engineering (TE) in Saldanha.
- Itumeleng Lehlokwa of Bombela in Midrand.
- Sudesh Sewdayal of Transnet Group Capital (TGC) in Durban.
Steve Harris, General Secretary of UNTU, says it is thanks to members like the recruitment drive winners that UNTU remains the strongest union in the rail transport sector. “Thanks to the dedication of our members UNTU is less than 1% behind our rival union in PRASA. This makes each of us proud to belong to the diverse UNTU family,” says Harris.
