MAKE US PROUD MELIKAYA

The United National Transport Union (UNTU) would like to wish Melikaya Nonyukela the best of luck when he will be representing South Africa, in the World Draughts Championship in the United States, from 21 July until 7 August.

“UNTU believes that Melikaya has got the potential to make his dream come true by becoming the Draughts World Champion. The Union is very proud of him and considers Melikaya’s achievements as an inspiration for all of us,” says Steve Harris, General Secretary of UNTU.

Melikaya (43) is a shore Crane Operator at Transnet’s Port of Ngqura, 20 km North-East of Port Elizabeth.

Draughts or Checkers is a strategy board game for two players, which involve diagonal moves of uniform game pieces and mandatory captures by jumping over opponent pieces.

His uncle and grandfather taught him how to play Draughts when he was a little boy, growing up in the small town of Peddie in the Eastern Cape.
