The United National Transport Union (UNTU) is proud to announce that it has 
introduced two new trophy’s from 1 September 2016 to recordnize the hard work, achievements and sacrifices of our Trade Union Representatives (TUR; s) and our Organisers across the country.
Eddie de Klerk, Deputy General Secretary of UNTU and Vice President of FEDUSA: Training and Education, decided to donate the Eddie de Klerk Floating Trophy to the Union to be awarded to the most promising TUR each year.
De Klerk, who oversees all the training of members and employees of UNTU for the past twenty years, says this trophy has always been a dream of his. He has always been very proud of each student, but especially of those whom are highly motivated and driven in achieving UNTU’s goal: to grow and remain the strongest Union in die Transport Sector.
“Trade union representatives doesn’t get paid. They represent workers in their grievance and disciplinary hearings, monitor the employer’s compliance with the Labour Relations Act and collective agreements and represent UNTU because they have a passion for fair and just working conditions.
“In the criteria for this trophy the TUR attendance of branch meetings, workplace meetings with members, assisting members at hearings and grievances and recruitment of new members will be taken into account,” says De Klerk.
Sonja Carstens, communication, media and liaison officer, decided to introduce an Organiser of the Month trophy to give praise to our Organisers who ensures that employees of PRASA, Bombela, Bombardier and Transnet choose UNTU’s by selling the
the variety of benefits this Unions members enjoy as part of their monthly contributions.
Organisers often are away from home to travel long distances in the demographic area where they are recruiting. They assist members, shop stewards and TUR’s with guidance in grievances, disciplinary hearings and arbitrations while working hand in hand with Head Office to identify new recruitment areas and to come up with recruitment incentives.
The Organiser of the Month Award will be given at the end of each month to the Organiser who recruited the most members during that month.
