UNTU TO MEET WITH SIYABONGA GAMA ON 30 MAY 2018

The United National Transport Union (UNTU) wish to inform its members in Transnet that Siyabonga Gama, Chief Executive Officer of Transnet, has requested an urgent meeting with UNTU leadership after the Union withdrew from all monetary negotiations with the employer.
This meeting is scheduled take place on 30 May 2018.
UNTU took this drastic step after a total breakdown in our trust relationship with Transnet.
Transnet had to confirm to UNTU, who represents the majority of its employees, in writing last week that it had granted financial assistance to the South African Express Airways SOC Ltd (SA Express) to the value of R222 million on 29 December 2017 amidst wage negotiations at the TBC.
During the wage negotiations Transnet presented financial statements to UNTU according to which the state-owned enterprise was struggling with its cash flow after the international credit rating agency, Standard & Poor, downgraded it to junk status in November 2017.
Transnet also maintained that it had to close a multi-term wage agreement to convince potential investors of its labour stability. Steve Harris, General Secretary of UNTU, says Transnet had misled the Union.
UNTU will consider terminating the wage agreement after the Union has discussions with Gama.
