COVID-19: #UNTU DEEPLY SADDENED ABOUT THE LOSS OF ITS MEMBERS

The United National Transport Union (UNTU) would like to extend our sincerest condolences to each UNTU member, their families and loved ones who have lost a beautiful soul to the deadly Covid-19 pandemic which has claimed the lives of almost 70 000 South Africans and almost 4,2 million people worldwide.

Those of us who did not feel the impact of Covid-19 directly in the first or the second wave, felt it this time around in the third wave which exceeded all predictions. To date 2,377,823 South African’s tested positive for this deadly virus, while 6, 384, 382 people to date got vaccinated.

Hendrik Fourie, President of UNTU, says that UNTU has always maintained one life lost, is one too many.

“This pandemic rendered everyone vulnerable irrespective of race, gender or age. It continues to have a devastating impact on the operations of our various employers and is crippling our economy, making it exceedingly difficult to create jobs, ensure a decent job and a fair wage for all, to alleviate poverty and to address the inequality in our country,” says Fourie.

According to him, UNTU is grateful that the country has been moved back to Level 3 by President Cyril Ramaphosa last night as we seem to have passed th peak of the third wave.

“While we are praying for the safety of all our members, their families, and their loved ones, UNTU would also like to appeal to all South Africans to follow the Covid-19 protocol, adhere to the lockdown regulations, maintain social distancing, wash your hands regularly with warm water and soap or sanitize your hands and wear your facial mask.”

Fourie appealed to all UNTU members whose jobs are essential to keeping the economy going, to keep an eye on each other, and to support each other. He commended all the UNTU members and staff of the Union who has taken its pledge, #UNTUCares, to their own communities where they are assisting with local projects to help those in need.

“Now is the time to give meaning to the spirit of UBUNTU in our country. Having humanity towards others in these exceedingly difficult times will play a major role in our fight against this pandemic as a society,” says Fourie.
